1. Description of the NC work plan stream

GBIF and its data providers hold a key position for enabling evidence based decision making within international science-policy initiatives like the Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES), the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), and the  Group on Earth Observations Biodiversity Observation Network (GEO BON).  In relation to the CBD, data published through GBIF is contributing directly to the progress of the Aichi targets (such as target 19). GBIF is likely to hold a key position to support regional based science-policy initiatives and regional legislation as well. For GBIF to become and remain relevant for various international science-policy initiatives it is vital that the requirements for biodiversity data and information relevant for these initiatives are well understood. This stream of the Nodes Committee work plan has the objective to promote collaborations within the Nodes Committee on liaising and contributing to international science-policy initiatives.

2. Suggested outcomes of the NC work plan stream

Please improve the possible outcomes after a two years implementation of the Nodes Committee work plan:

  • Increased nodes collaborations and availability of use cases on contributing to international science-policy
  • Improved understanding within the GBIF network of the policy needs in relation to data

3. Suggested activities for the NC work plan stream

Please expand the list of possible activities for the two year Nodes Committee work plan, for example:

  • Increased amount of Nodes that have made connections with those decision-makers responsible for the country’s contribution to international science-policy initiatives

4. Actions suggested by regional work plans or the NSG

The following list of activities could be used as a resources to draw activities from for the stream on improving relevance of GBIF for science-policy initiatives of the Nodes Committee work plan.

  • National checklists - Assess reporting; European WP
  • Summary Directive/Regulation requirements; European WP
  • Organize biodiversity science-policy dialogue; African WP
  • Enlargement-Contributing examples of best practice to showcase GBIF to policy makers; NSG brainstorm

5. Information resources already available in GBIF

6. Instructions for the NC work plan group at GNM13

The five work plan groups of streams 4-8 will work with the initial content on the topic of each stream at the community site and will consolidate and expand this content per stream. The results of the work plan groups will form the basis of the NC work plan descriptions for the relevant streams.

The facilitator of this group is TBD
