Call for increased participation in Data Quality Interest Group Task Groups

It is now coming up on twelve months since the TDWG Data Quality Interest Group was established, and we are currently preparing reports for TDWG2015 in Nairobi.  I will post our report here once we have submitted it to the TDWG Executive.

Unfortunately, none of the Convenors or Task Group leaders will be able to go to Nairobi, but we will be presenting reports nevertheless.

The three Task Groups have begun discussion and are beginning to make significant progress, but in spite of having over 100 people who have expressed an interest in participating in the Interest Group, only half a dozen or so are actively particpating in the discussions.  We NEED more participation.

Task Group Leaders

  • Allan Koch - TG1 - Framework on Data Quality
  • Lee Belbin - TG2 - Tools Services and Workflows
  • Miles Nicholls - TG3 - Use Case Library

will all shortly be circulating items for discussion and feedback.  I urge as many of you as possible to respond and contribute.  We only have another twelve months before we hope to submit our final report.  We cannot produce an adequate, comprehensive and workable report and/or products unless everyone chips in - please so do - don't leave it up to the Convenors and Task Group leaders to do all the work.

Now is the time to increase your participation.  We need more feedback.  In the Discussion under Task Group 3, Miles has added a Spreadsheet on Use Cases that he wants as many people as possible to fill out.  Please, I urge you, fill this Spreadsheet out and return to Miles.

We really do need lots of feedback on this so please let's make this Interest Group work.

Again, I would stress the urgency of receiving more feedback from this group.

We are hoping to present a final report to TDWG at Costa Rica later this year.   You all put your names down and joined this discussion group in order to help set up a workable Framework for Data Quality and well as lists of Tools, Services and Work flows and Use Cases.

Allan has recently submitted the Framework Document for publication and we are awaiting a response form the editors.

Lee and Miles have put a lot of work into prepareing documents for comments.  Unfortunately very few, if any comments have been forthcoming, and both are feeling as though all the work is falling to them.  This should not be the case as these are working groups that require participation if we are to achieve valuable outputs.  So I urge you all to provide feedback to Lee and Miles - the sooner the better as we are meeting in Brazil next month to progress these documents and would like some concrete feedback before then.

Lee (TG2) has just released a new version of the Tools, Services and Workflows and is looking for feedback http://community.gbif.org/pg/pages/view/47182/tdwgdqig-task-group-2-tools-services-and-workflows

Miles (TG3) has just released a new document on Use Cases and is also looking for feedback http://community.gbif.org/pg/pages/view/47749/tdwg-dqig-task-group-3-use-case-library-for-data-quality

Thank you - and please take a few minutes to examine these documents and provide feedback

This week the TDWG/GBIF Interest Group coordinators and Task Group Leaders are meeting in conjunction with the two GBIF Fitness for Use Groups (Agrobiodiversity and Species Modelling) in Sao Paulo, Brazil discussing the Framework as well as the progress on Task Groups 2 and 3.

We will make a report available after the meeting.

We will also prepare a proposal to run a Data Quality Symposium at TDWG2016 as well as planning the meetings of the Interest Groups.

The Task Group Leaders of Tasks 2 and 3 are still awaiting feedback from most of you on Tools and Use Cases.  Please take a few minutes to look at their spreadsheets and where possible send them any information you have.
