GBIF Community Site Terms of Use

These Terms of Use (“Terms”) govern your access to and use of the GBIF Community Site (the “Site”), and any information, text, graphics, or other materials uploaded, downloaded or appearing on the Site (collectively referred to as “Content”). Your access to and use of the Site is conditional on your acceptance of and compliance with these Terms. By accessing or using the Site you agree to be bound by these Terms.

You are responsible for your use of the Site, for any Content you post to the Site, and for any consequences thereof. The Content you submit, post, or display will be able to be viewed by other users of the Site and other GBIF-related services and websites. You should only provide Content that you are comfortable sharing with others under these Terms.

The Site may change without prior notice to you (although GBIF will make all reasonable efforts to communicate such changes). In addition, GBIF may stop (permanently or temporarily) providing access to the Site and its services and features to you or to users generally and may not be able to provide you with prior notice. We also retain the right to create limits on use and storage at our sole discretion at any time without prior notice to you.

Neither the Global Biodiversity Information Facility (GBIF) nor the GBIF Secretariat shall be made responsible for any of the opinions expressed in this Site. The official communication channel for the GBIF Secretariat is the main GBIF site www.gbif.org.

For further information on personal data management under the Site, please visit the Privacy Policy page.

A. General Recommendations for Users

To gain maximum benefit from using the site, the Users are recommended to follow these guidelines:

  1. Maintain a complete User profile. This will help other users to identify potential areas for collaboration based on various criteria (i.e. areas of expertise, geographical location). A User profile picture will also serve to easily identify your contributions to the Site and to facilitate face-to-face interactions.

  2. Make use of the community news system. Increase the impact of your initiatives by sharing them widely (see note about languages below).

  3. Create (or join as a member) and actively participate in the groups that are relevant to your role in GBIF or your areas of expertise. Explore frequently the groups created in the site to find new avenues for collaboration.

  4. Invite other relevant individuals to join the Site. Enrich discussions and collaboration projects by inviting experts in the different areas to contribute through the Site.

  5. Consider activating the system alerts for your groups and your Contacts. The system can produce email alerts when content has been added or modified. Consult the 'GBIF Community Site support group' for more information on how to activate these alerts.

B. Languages

The Site interface is in English by default, but other languages are available. Please check your 'settings' page to explore other languages available. If you are interested in translating the Site interface into other languages, please contact the GBIF Secretariat at gbif(AT)gbif.org.

Users are encouraged to create groups and interact in the Site using the language of their choice. However, when posting Content using Site-wide mechanisms (such as the 'community news'), English should be the preferred language to maximise the impact of the communications.

C. Safety and Security

The GBIF Secretariat will make all reasonable efforts to keep the Site safe and secure, but this cannot be guaranteed. Users, on their part, are required to comply with the following rules:

  1. You will not send or otherwise post unauthorized commercial communications (such as spam) on the Site.

  2. You will not collect Users' content or information, or otherwise access the Site, using automated means (such as harvesting bots, robots, spiders, or scrapers) without permission from the GBIF Secretariat.

  3. You will not engage in unlawful multi-level marketing, such as a pyramid scheme, on the Site.

  4. You will not upload viruses or other malicious code.

  5. You will not solicit login information or access an account belonging to someone else.

  6. You will not bully, intimidate, or harass any user.

  7. You will not post content that: is hateful, threatening, or pornographic; incites violence; or contains nudity or graphic or gratuitous violence.

  8. You will not develop or operate a third-party application containing alcohol-related or other mature content (including advertisements).

  9. You will not use the Site to do anything unlawful, misleading, malicious, or discriminatory.

  10. You will not do anything that could disable, overburden, or impair the proper working of the Site, such as a denial of service attack.

  11. You will not facilitate or encourage any violations of these Terms of Use.

D. Contents

The GBIF Community Site is a social platform targeted at the GBIF community and professionals in the realms of biodiversity and biodiversity informatics at large.

The Contents published on the site must be related to GBIF and its thematic scope: (1) Biodiversity, (2) Biodiversity informatics, (3) Biodiversity Information Networks and (4) Biodiversity data capture, digitisation, retrieval, analysis and use. Content clearly deviating from this scope would be considered off-topic and could be deleted from the Site without prior notice.

Unless otherwise stated, the contents of this website are released under a 'Creative Commons Attribution-Noncommercial-Share Alike 3.0 Unported License' and may be reused according to that license.

If you want to share copyrighted material using this site, please clearly state this fact in the text or in the element metadata.

If you want to limit access to any of your Content, please use the Site mechanisms (i.e. 'access level', 'write access level', contact groups) to define who will be able to access that content.

E. Abuse

Users are required not to post content or take any action on the Site that infringes or violates these Terms of Use, someone else's rights, or otherwise violates the law. Any such Content will be removed from the Site without prior notice.

If you find inappropriate content in the site, please report it using the appropriate button ('report this') in the menu displayed on the left on every page. The Content Manager of the Site will analyse the report against these Terms of Use and will take the necessary actions, including deleting the reported content and/or banning the offending user from the system.
